The Japanese consumer blatant disregard for environmental issues

It has come to my attention in the last year and a half while working in an international hot spot that the Japanese have a problem with shopping bags. It seems that there is some sort of tradition that requires them to have a bag for each item purchased. With the start of 2011 today, We have given away around 100 extra bags within an hour to 20 Japanese tourists. The bags dont even say Grand Canyon on them. They are just regular recycled paper and plastic bags. While it might be tradition to gift each item into a seperate bag for everyone they buy for, its absolutely absurd the impacts this must have on the environment. So maybe one day the Japanese tourist will make a new years resolution to stop wasting so many bags.
